Hi, I’m Rick
Many people come to therapy because something in their life feels repetitive, difficult, or hard to explain.
I offer psychodynamic therapy online to adults across the UK.
In our work, we slow down and look at the patterns beneath anxiety, self-criticism, and relationship strain so they can begin to feel more understandable and less overwhelming..
Reasons People Get in Touch
People come to therapy for different reasons, but certain themes tend to repeat.
Anxiety that lingers even when there is no clear reason
Relationships that follow the same difficult pattern
Feeling overwhelmed by emotion, or disconnected from it
An inner voice that is critical or unforgiving
A sense of being stuck between who you are and who you feel you should be
Many of these patterns began as ways of coping. At one time, they helped you manage something difficult. Over time, they can narrow emotional range and make life feel more constrained.
Therapy focuses on understanding these patterns and gradually increasing your capacity to experience emotion without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down.
What Therapy Gradually Develops
Therapy is not about eliminating anxiety. It is about increasing your ability to stay with emotional experience without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down.
Over time, people often notice:
Less internal pressure
More space between feeling and reaction
Greater steadiness in relationships
Increased trust in their own judgement
Why Psychodynamic Therapy
Some people come to therapy with insight, yet still feel caught in the same patterns.
Psychodynamic therapy pays attention to:
The emotional tensions beneath anxiety
How anxiety is experienced in the body
Protective habits that developed for a reason
Repeating patterns in close relationships
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on what happens beneath the surface of anxiety and relationship strain. We pay attention to emotional experience as it unfolds in the body, and to the patterns that shape how you relate to yourself and others.
About My Practice
I am a UK-based psychodynamic psychotherapist working online.
My work focuses on how feelings, anxiety, and protective patterns interact in real time. We move at a pace that feels manageable, gradually increasing your ability to experience emotion without becoming overwhelmed.
Rather than pushing for insight alone, we slow down and build the capacity to stay with emotional experience safely.
I have worked in psychotherapy for over eight years and have spent more than 4,500 hours in clinical practice.
Alongside private practice, I contribute to national media discussions on anxiety and relationships. My work is informed by contemporary psychodynamic thinking, including intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy.

FAQ: Therapy with Rick

Not at all. Many people I work with don’t fit neatly into a label; they just know they’re tired of feeling stuck, anxious, or repeating the same painful patterns. Therapy is about you, not a diagnosis.
-
That’s common, and it doesn’t mean you can’t get better. Sometimes, past therapies may have only skimmed the surface. My work focuses on encouraging you to get underneath the surface noise, so we are able to discover what’s really going on and what is driving your anxiety, shame, self-sabotage, and whatever may be holding you back from the life you want these days as an adult, increasing the potential for long-term change in your life.
-
The length of therapy varies. Some clients see significant changes in a few weeks or a few months. Some people come to therapy to work on something really specific, while others benefit from longer-term work. Progress depends on your readiness to engage and stay present, along with the issues we’re exploring and your goals, which will inevitably change throughout therapy. Together, we’ll set a pace that works for you.
-
Feeling afraid to open up is really normal. Therapy isn’t about forcing disclosure; it’s about us co-creating a confidential, professional space where you can begin to share at your own pace. Part of my role is helping you face those fears while feeling supported, not judged, because part of therapy is learning why those fears are there and how they can loosen their grip. You don’t have to face it alone.
-
I practice psychodynamic therapy and ISTDP principles: evidence-based approaches that help us to uncover the ‘unconscious’ emotional patterns behind anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, and relationship difficulties. It’s really not about quick fixes, and more about developing your capacity to tolerate your own anxiety, and experience your feelings and emotions so you don’t have to keep avoiding and feeling stuck within yourself.

Yes. I provide secure online therapy sessions across the UK via encrypted video (Doxy.me). Many clients find online therapy just as effective as in-person, with the added flexibility and comfort of working from home.
-
My fee is £65 for a 50-minute online therapy session. Morning, afternoon, and evening appointments are available.
-
At present, I don’t work directly with insurance providers. Therapy is paid privately, though some clients are able to claim back costs depending on their policy. It’s worth checking directly with your insurer. I can provide receipts if your provider offers reimbursement.
-
You’re welcome to email me about scheduling or practical matters. The core of the work happens within our scheduled sessions, which helps keep the work contained and focused.

Yes. In addition to my clinical work, I contribute to national media and press, including interviews and articles on mental health, psychotherapy, anxiety, and trauma. Please visit my Media & Press page for more details or to make an enquiry.
